The US president claimed the general was planning to kill more Americans before he was neutralised by the airstrike.
President Donald Trump said Major General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time.
He further blamed Soleimani for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of protesters killed in Iran itself.
The US president played down the killing of the commander by saying the Iranian people were not as sad over the killing as their leaders were making it seem.
