Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso has moved to ease the growing hype over Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
The Neapolitans’ record signing had a hand in four goals in their 11-0 friendly win over L’Aquila at the Abruzzo training camp in Castel di Sangro this past weekend, striking a hat-trick and providing an assist in an impressive debut performance.
The quality of Napoli’s opponents obviously suggests that fans should not read too much into Osimhen’s showing, but it is undoubtedly a promising start for the Super Eagles attacker.
Manager Gattuso has cannily tried to play down expectations for the 21-year-old, insisting that they haven’t signed “Pele or Maradona”.
“It’s too easy to get excited now, we’ve got to give him time and let him work, not put pressure on,” the former midfield battler is quoted by Tribal Football.
“He is an important player and we paid a lot for him, but there were no doubts he would give us something different that we haven’t had in my time here. There’s a long way to go.
“It’s not like we suddenly signed Pele or Maradona, we simply brought in a player with certain characteristics that can help us.”
